Antithyroid Peroxidase

The objective of this test is to diagnose an autoimmune thyroid disease as well as to differentiate it from other thyroid disorders. The development of antithyroid peroxidase takes place when immune system by mistake targets the components of thyroid gland. This results in chronic inflammation of the thyroid, tissue damage, and/or disruption of thyroid function.

When suggested?

This test is asked when abnormal results are obtained in TSH and/or free T4 tests. Also, when there are symptoms of low or high level of thyroid hormones or the presence of a goiter. Particularly, if the cause is supposed to be an autoimmune disease.
