Coombs tests are done to find specific antibodies that attack red blood cells. Antibodies are proteins made by the immune system. There are two types of Coombs tests.
The indirect Coombs test is used in prenatal testing of pregnant women and testing before a blood transfusion. The test detects antibodies against foreign red blood cells.
