Total Protein/Albumin Test

Two types of proteins – Albumin and globulin are measured in the total protein test. Proteins are necessary for all cells and tissues. The albumin tends to help prevent the leakage of fluid from the blood vessels and globulins play important role in immune system.

Conditions in which this test is performed:

  • As part of a comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP) as a routine health check up
  • To know about nutritional status of a person
  • When symptoms suggest a liver, kidney or bone marrow disorder
  • For investigation of the cause of abnormal pooling of fluid in tissue

It becomes necessary to perform further tests when total protein is found abnormal, to confirm the exact cause.
