Description
- Coombs tests are done to find certain antibodies that attack red blood cells. Antibodies are proteins made by the immune system.
- There are two types of Coombs tests. The direct test looks for antibodies that are stuck to red blood cells. The direct Coombs test is used to test for autoimmune hemolytic anemia—that is, a condition where the immune system breaks down red blood cells, leading to anemia.
