An ANA test detects antinuclear antibodies (ANA) in your blood. Your immune system normally makes antibodies to help you fight infection. In contrast, antinuclear antibodies often attack your body’s tissues — specifically targeting each cell’s nucleus.
ANA test is useful in the diagnosis of patients with autoimmune diseases such as SLE, Mixed connective tissue disease, Rheumatoid arthritis, Sjogren’s syndrome, Progressive systemic sclerosis and CREST syndrome.
