A G6PD test measures the levels of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), an enzyme in your blood. Enzymes are chemicals that help the cells of your bodywork. G6PD helps red blood cells (RBCs) function normally and protects them. A lack of G6PD may make RBCs more vulnerable to breaking down in a process called haemolysis.
A G6PD deficiency can lead to kidney failure and worse. Fortunately, symptoms of G6PD deficiency can be identified early on and then resolved.
